I P2V'd a Windows 7 machine in a doctor's office that has a serial port which is needed to connect to a proprietary Healthcare instrument. The instrument works fine & would be expensive for the office to replace. At the same time it connects to the workstation via a serial port. The Virtual machine appears to connect to the network & most software works great, but in the event the Physical machine fails or we want to upgrade it, I understand that I should order a new machine with a serial port but how to I get the serial port on the virtual machine to know it is supposed to connect to the serial port on the new physical machine?
How would this be different if I played the VM on VM Workstation Player on a new physical machine as opposed to keeping the VM on a Network drive? If I kept the VM on a Network drive would it still be possible to 'map' the serial port on the VM to the serial port on the new Physical machine? Would the process be easier if I just kept the VM on the HD of the new physical machine that has a serial pot on it?
