Find out which version of vmware tools is installed on a linux vm in runlevel 3

Hi,

I have to check the vmware-tools version of all of our virtual machines. Usually I check whether the tools are "OK" or "out of date". This time my boss needs the version of the tools installed on our virtual machines. No problem so far. But we have some virtual machines running only in runlevel 3 without any graphics. I cannot start the vmware-toolbox to check the version.

So how do I find out which vmware-tools are running on these virtual machines? Where do I find this information?
